A condensate of mechanical achievements
With its high-frequency movement (5 Hz) incorporating all the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” innovations in the field of Silinvar® and its patented display ensuring fast and accurate 1/10th of a second reading, the Ref. 5470P-001 demonstrates Patek Philippe competence and innovative spirit in the field of short-time measurement.
The first ever Patek Philippe wrist-chronograph measuring 1/10th of a second
To further push the boundaries of mechanical horology, the engineers relied on the caliber CH 29-535 PS – with a traditional architecture (manually wound, column-wheel control, horizontal wheel clutch) – and increased its frequency from 4 to 5Hz (36,000 semi-oscillations per hour for 10 jumps per second), allowing the measurement of tenths of a second. Discover the exceptional performances of the caliber CH 29-535 PS 1/10 in the following video.
Fluid and perfectly synchronized hand movements
As a sweep seconds hand alone would not be sufficient to display tenths of a second with an optimal legibility on the dial of a wristwatch, the designers resolved to provide the caliber CH 29-535 PS 1/10 with two independent and perfectly synchronized chronograph mechanisms, each of them driving a different central hand. The hand that performs a complete revolution per minute shows the stopped seconds in the traditional manner. The other hand (in red lacquered Silinvar®) performs one revolution per 12 seconds. Despite the high speed of rotation, this tenth-of-a-second hand moves fluidly without jumps or vibrations.
Innovation at the service of performance and precision
To handle the three challenges – efficiency, reliability, and rate accuracy – Patek Philippe decided to use, for the first time in its current collection, its Oscillomax® ensemble that had been developed by the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” department. This high-tech regulator mechanism has three innovative components that rely on all advantages of the Silinvar® technology – it is based on a derivative of silicon with extraordinary physical and mechanical characteristics (lightweight, rugged, antimagnetic, etc.).
A platinum case with a blue dial and red accents
A movement dedicated entirely to performance and short-time measurements needs to be well protected so Patek Philippe created an inimitably sporty exterior.
The elegant blue of the dial harmonizes exceptionally well with the shimmering reflections of the platinum case. The navy blue calfskin strap with an embossed fabric pattern and red decorative seams in perfect harmony with the colors of the dial.
The sapphire-crystal case back (interchangeable with the solid platinum back delivered with the watch) affords a spectacular view of the caliber CH 29-535 PS 1/10 with its filigreed components and the elaborately executed finissage (bridges with chamfered and polished edges, Geneva striping, etc.).
